    Nitrous Oxide Sedation

A More Comfortable, Relaxing Dental Experience

We understand that visiting the dentist can make some people feel nervous or anxious. If dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, sensitivity, or fear of treatment has made you postpone dental care, nitrous oxide sedation may help you feel calm and comfortable throughout your appointment.

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” is a mild form of inhalation sedation that has been used safely in dentistry for many years. It can be used for both children and adults when appropriate and is suitable for many routine and more involved dental procedures.

What Does Nitrous Oxide Feel Like?

Nitrous oxide is breathed through a small, comfortable mask placed over your nose. You remain awake, conscious, and able to communicate with your dental team throughout the procedure.

Many patients describe the experience as:

    • Feeling relaxed and less nervous
    • A pleasant sense of calm
    • Feeling light or slightly “floaty”
    • Reduced awareness of the sights, sounds, and sensations of dental treatment
    • Less sensitivity to discomfort
    • A reduced urge to gag
    • A sense that the appointment passes more quickly

You are still able to respond to your dentist and follow simple instructions when needed. The goal is not to put you to sleep, but to help you feel relaxed and comfortable while remaining responsive.

    Why Choose Nitrous Oxide?

    Works quickly

Nitrous oxide reaches the brain rapidly. Relaxation generally develops within a few minutes of beginning inhalation.

    Adjustable throughout your appointment

The amount of nitrous oxide can be adjusted continuously according to how you are feeling. Your dental team can increase or decrease the level of sedation as needed.

    You remain in control

Unlike general anesthesia, you remain conscious and can communicate with your dentist throughout treatment.

    Fast recovery

Once the nitrous oxide is stopped, you breathe regular oxygen for a short period to help clear the gas from your system. Its effects wear off quickly, and most patients can return to their normal activities shortly afterward.

No needles required for the sedation

Nitrous oxide is delivered through a small nasal mask, which can be particularly reassuring for patients who are uncomfortable with needles.

    Helpful for dental anxiety

Nitrous oxide can take the edge off nervousness and make it easier for patients who have previously avoided or delayed dental treatment to receive the care they need.

    May reduce gagging

Inhalation sedation can be particularly helpful for patients with a strong gag reflex, making certain dental procedures much easier to tolerate.

    Useful for sensitive patients

Nitrous oxide may help reduce the perception of discomfort and make dental treatment feel more manageable. Local anesthetic may still be recommended when a procedure requires complete numbing of the teeth or deeper tissues.

You Are Awake and Able to Communicate

One of the important differences between nitrous oxide and deeper forms of sedation is that you are not put to sleep. You remain conscious and can communicate with your dental team throughout your treatment.

Your dentist and dental team will monitor how you are responding and adjust the level of sedation to help maintain your comfort.

How Much Sedation Will I Receive?

There is no single amount that is right for everyone. Nitrous oxide is typically titrated, meaning it is gradually adjusted until you reach a comfortable level of relaxation.

This allows your dental team to use the lowest effective level needed to help you feel comfortable. If you feel that you need more or less, simply let your dental team know.

    Is Nitrous Oxide Safe?

Nitrous oxide has a long history of use in dentistry and is generally considered a very safe sedation option when administered appropriately by trained dental professionals.

Your dentist will review your medical history and overall health to determine whether nitrous oxide is appropriate for you. As with any medication or sedation technique, there are certain medical situations where it may not be recommended.

    What Happens During Your Appointment?

    Your experience is simple:

    1

    Before treatment

Your dental team will review your health history and discuss the procedure and sedation with you.

    2

    Getting comfortable

A small nasal mask is placed comfortably over your nose.

    3

    Relaxation

You breathe normally through your nose while the nitrous oxide takes effect.

    4

    Treatment

Once you are comfortable, your dentist begins treatment. The sedation level can be adjusted throughout the appointment.

    5

    After treatment

The nitrous oxide is stopped and you breathe oxygen/normal air as directed by your dental team. The effects wear off quickly.

Will I Still Need Local Anesthetic?

That depends on the procedure. Nitrous oxide can help with relaxation and may reduce the perception of discomfort, but it does not replace local anesthetic for many procedures, particularly treatments involving the teeth or deeper tissues.

For procedures such as fillings, extractions, or other treatments where complete numbness is necessary, your dentist may recommend local anesthetic in addition to nitrous oxide. For some procedures involving the gums or soft tissues, nitrous oxide may provide sufficient comfort, although its pain-relieving effect varies from person to person.

Who Can Benefit From Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide may be particularly helpful for patients who:

    • Feel anxious or nervous about dental treatment
    • Have had an unpleasant dental experience in the past
    • Have a strong gag reflex
    • Have difficulty sitting comfortably through dental procedures
    • Have sensitive teeth or heightened sensitivity to dental sensations
    • Are worried about needles or dental instruments
    • Have been avoiding dental appointments because of fear or anxiety
    • Want an easier, more relaxed dental experience
